SSL Certificates

There are various types of SSL certificates available, generally ranging from “easy to validate” to “complex to validate,” generating increasing levels of trust as each level demands more validation from the requester. CleverHost can help you choose the right SSL certificate for your website by outlining the level of validation required, and the scenario each one is best for.

Domain Validation

Domain Validation (DV) SSL Certificates are issued the fastest. Validation occurs via email; a validation email is sent, containing a link you must click, with a code you enter into the page visited.

  • A DV Wildcard SSL allows you to protect multiple subdomains using a single certificate (e.g. blog.cleverhost.ca, clients.cleverhost.ca, rock.cleverhost.ca, roll.cleverhost.ca)
  • Subject Alternative Name (SAN) control in Unified Communications certificates (UCC) allows for hosting multiple SSL-enabled websites on a single server, eliminating the hassles of configuring different IP addresses to different SSL certificates.

DV certificates are the easiest kind of SSL certificate to order and validate, and start as low as $19.95 per year.

Organization Validation

Organization Validation (OV) SSL Certificates, sometimes called Business Validation (BV) certificates, require domain validation via email, along with supplying company documents for business/organization authentication. The validation process for OV certificates is manual, and can take two or three business days to complete.

To get Business Validation SSL Certificate you may be required to submit documents like your articles of incorporation, business license, and/or DUNS number. The verification process also includes a phone call using the phone number found in public databases, or the organization’s website. OV certificates are recommended for business e-commerce websites. Wildcard and UCC/SAN certificates are also available.

OV certificates are fairly easy for businesses to order and validate, and start as low as $117 per year.

Extended Validation

Extended Validation (EV) SSL Certificates are the epitome of trust. The organization and its principals are heavily scrutinized, ensuring that the green address bar visitors will see can be trusted. Multi-domain certificates are also available.

To get an Extended Validation SSL Certificate you will be required to submit documents like your articles of incorporation, business license, and/or DUNS number to the Certificate Authority. The verification process also includes a phone call using the phone number found in public databases, or your organization’s website, with at least one business principal that must attest to the information submitted, and there are also guidelines the organization and principals must meet.

EV certificates are recommended for high volume business e-commerce websites, government websites, and any organization that wishes to display the green address bar to its visitors. It typically takes one week to have an EV SSL certificate issued.

EV certificates are the toughest kind of SSL certificate to order and validate, but they inspire the most confidence amongst consumers and users. EV certificates start as low as $188 per year.
